The Star Sign of Pisces & Typical Pisces Traits

The Pisces Star Sign

Pisces, named from the Latin plural word for "fish," is the fourteenth largest constellation in our galaxy, the Milky Way. Because of its immensity, 17th-century astrologers proposed dividing the constellation into four parts: the north and south fish, and the north and south cords. One hundred years later, a proposal was made to divide some of the stars in Pisces into a new constellation called "Testudo" (the Turtle).

Even the Babylonians were familiar with the constellation Pisces, which they referred to as "The Tails." This connection also tied the constellation with Ishtar, the Mesopotamian goddess of love. The ancient Greeks took up this idea, and in Greek mythology, the two fish represent Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, and her son, Eros. According to legend, Aphrodite and Eros were escaping a gigantic giant named Typhon when they leaped into the Euphrates and changed themselves into fish to escape.

Typical Pisces Traits

Pisces is the final of the twelve star signs, beginning on February 20 and ending on March 20. Pisces, like Gemini, Virgo, and Sagittarius, is a changeable sign. These signals are especially adaptable and adept at dealing with change. Pisceans, like the water element connected with their sign, can flow with the tides of life and adapt to new places or situations with remarkable ease.

The planets Neptune and Jupiter, which dominate Pisces, reflect the two sides of this dreamy star sign. Neptune represents imagination, fantasy, and the link to illusion and the supernatural. Meanwhile, Jupiter promotes enjoyment, optimism, and spiritual and intellectual development. These two planets, like Pisces' emblem, a circle formed by two swimming fish, represent the water sign's duality. Pisces frequently struggles internally with the choice of living in an illusory dream world or the actual one. Pisces, the final star sign, pulls together all of the experiences and lessons from the previous eleven signs: joy and grief, hopes and anxieties.
